Active.com Consumer Shoe Experience – NYC Marathon Week
My iphone alarm goes off at 4:00 am, rise and shine, so early that it feels like a race morning. It’s Marathon week here in NYC, and I am up to catch the 5:55 train to Manhattan.
I accepted the invitation from Active.com a few weeks ago failing to realize this event was part of a series of offerings during ING NYRR Marathon week here in NYC. Active.com invited 100 competitive sports enthusiasts for the Consumer Running Shoe Experience, being the online junkie that I am, I quickly accepted the offer.
Asics, Brooks, K-Swiss (who knew?) Pearl Izumi and Saucony offered a sneak peek presentation of running shoe innovation. Along with breakfast, an ActiveX workout session was offered and of course the SWAG BAG (because who’s not in it for the swag right?)
Minimalist Running is the big, sexy industry buzzword, everybody’s doing it, and they’re all one-upping each other on who is doing it best. Manufacturers are incorporating new materials and technology to construct lighter shoes with better, more efficient support.
I was impressed with the presentations from the K-Swiss and Saucony teams with Brooks and Pearl Izumi offering up delicious color palettes with great technology:
The VP of Product Development for K-Swiss introduced their new moisture resistant treated fiber used in construction.
Team Saucony introduced the “8mm Difference”. A re-engineer and relaunch of two of their most popular shoes with a reduction in heel-toe offset from 12mm to 8mm. The advantages of the change are better control, alignment and suspension.
Brooks meets the needs of minimalist movement with the Pure Connect, the lightest shoe from the Pure Project collection in amazing color options!
Pearl Izumi (Kasaki) A shoe for a neutral foot, this brand is known for fantastic color ways and in my opinion a great price points. The innovative lacing system and high manufacturing standards for quality and detail are the stand-outs for Pearl Izumi.
This was the inaugural event, the group was small enough for personal interaction between all who attended. I’m looking forward to see what Active.com does next year, hopefully bigger, better with more sponsors. I would have appreciated the opportunity to try on shoes which would have been a tremendous difference in attendees experiencing features and benefits of the shoes. It was a great first-time event, with perfectly timed sessions, and I had the chance to meet some amazing peeps!

So, just like that I’m training for my first 26.2.
I volunteer my time as an ambassador/organizer for a fantastic group of enthusiastic women who care about fitness and well-being. The girls and I were all on Facebook chat and hyped each other up to do the Rock and Roll series in New Orleans. I think someone posted information about the New Orleans Saints promotion on the BGR! website. The promotion - ‘Saints Victory Savings’ was $1 discount for every point that the Saints won by. We have to thank Drew Brees and Leigh Torrence’s performance as the race registration fee was an unheard of $35. Seven thousand people signed up for the race on a Monday. Record numbers. I was one of them - I was so excited I urged my group members and also several of my family and friends to sign up just because it was such a great deal!
This year, I also qualified for the New York City Marathon in 2012, so when it came time to select which race I’d be participating for the RnR NO, my finger hovered over full. Full, 26.2, CLICK! ( I am in, now training for a full…fool) My twisted logic says “you’ll need a practice marathon before the real thing” <———-that right there is just crazy.
I need to share with you that I have this mental block on anything over 13.1. I finish my half marathons and look at the souls of people who are still running, only half way done. I see them continuing through their chutes to the next 13.1 miles. I watch them and am grateful that I get to go back to my hotel, shower and have a great meal. On particularly grueling race days, I pity them. I’ve done at least 20 half marathons in my 3 year running career, and that mental wall of 13.1 is a tough one to crack.
I started running because of my “bucket list”. I had one before the movie came out. I called it yearly goals. I choose something each year that I want to accomplish, usually it’s something that requires a skill, training and hours of practice to master. One year it was re-learning the game of tennis, another cake decorating, and it goes on. We’ll, actually the year after the cake decorating goal, I gained a good 25 lbs from baking such delicious calorie bombs. So running a marathon seemed like a good goal and a great way to shake those pounds.
My biggest hurdle is the long run training. I am slowly changing my thinking on how to accomplish long runs. I was fearful that I would not be able to handle the building long runs due to boredom, so I am searching for a training partner who is crazy enough to train for a full marathon in the dead of winter. In signing up for a March race, I am almost guaranteeing that many of my long runs will be done on a dreadmill. With winter’s snow and ice - sometimes indoors is the only option.
The 26.2 miles for me has been such a mental block - I plan to post throughout my home, encouraging notes on breaking that distance wall.
This sport is such a mental thing, I need to re-condition my thoughts. Today I pledge to STOP owning the statement that “The long run is difficult”. <——-After typing it right there, I’m never going to say it again. I am also going to own that I can do the training solo if I need to. I can’t let the lack of a training partner keep me from doing a workout.
I trained for my first 8K using Couch to 5K. I trained for my first Half Marathon using the Nike + program. I am going to use the Hal Higedon app to train for my first full.
In the past couple of months, I didn’t necessarily train for my races. This year, I’ve scheduled for a half marathon or other shorter distance on my calendar every 2 weeks - so I did mileage just to stay conditioned. I am pretty sure I have over-trained some weeks.
Yesterday, I did day one, the first of a 124 day training schedule to prep for the March 4th race. I like the Hal Higedon app interface, the flexibility of entering in information, and the cross training details built in. The one problem I see I am going to have is Hals’ creepy voice that overlays my music. For one, this guy does NOT have a motivational speaking voice. When he speaks, I want to walk, really slow. It was the first day, so I am going to give listening to him a few more shots. I have not completely abandoned the Nike program, I am still logging my miles on my Nike Tom Tom Gps watch, and will be using Nike’s fantastic interface to track and review my progress and performance.
So - here we go. Onto day 2. I’ll tell you about it later.
Hobooken Halloween 5K - Running in Rain Sleet Wind and Snow (in a costume)
When does it snow in NJ in October? I mean, what are the chances? I read something earlier today that said,” it’s only snowed 4 times in October since the Civil War”. We’re calling it #snowtober here in the Tri-State area.
As runners and outdoor sports enthusiasts, we pray for optimal conditions, but can deal with the less than ideal scenario. We have some WONDERFUL weather days, and then there are times where you ask yourself “Am I crazy?” “If I were someone else, would I think I were crazy”, are all those warm cozy people in that Starbucks over there, looking at us run by and are thinking/saying “Those runners are crazy”. Today folks was one of those days.
The amazing thing is that I wasn’t really even upset about how BAD the weather was. I was most concerned with making an afternoon flight to Detroit (which I didn’t end up making because the airport was closed due to snowtober). Oh, and the Governor of NJ has declared a state of Emergency. (Insert cruel food related joke).
Today was about 3 women from my group, who all signed up for this 5K after I posted it as a group race activity. These women were all out running their first 5K’s. The race conditions were NOT pretty. 1. Driving Rain ( that turned to ice/snow towards the end) 2. Windy as heck (with tall buildings, that wind creates what we call “The Hawk” 3. 40 degree temps. They all did a fantastic job and completed the run! Smiles on their faces ( even if being pelted with icy rain) were fantastic.
Pre-race my run group and I huddled in a residential building keeping warm and dry. I was to dress up in one of those head to toe white body suits, but with the rain, the suit became transparent, so I had to ditch my costume!
All of the ladies ( all 8 of us ) finished (no pr’s of course). An experience like this tells you much about yourself, your limits and what you can bear. It’s really much more than just running 3.1 miles.
Post race, my fingers were frozen to the bone. I was glad that I paid for underground parking, at least I was able to strip off my wet layers of clothing to TRY and be a little dry on my ride home.
Again, today was SO not about me. It was to be a fun costume run, but turned into a huge statement on personal achievement for our group members and anybody else running today’s race. Special thanks to the The Hoboken Elysianettes Running Society for organizing this race. Thanks to the volunteers for sticking it out! Happy #snowtober.
I attend my weekly weights, swim and pilates sessions like religion. Faithfully I bring my mat (to avoid getting the hee-bee-gee-bees from the community mats), my water, towel and my resolve to the five sessions that I attend on a weekly basis without fail. (that’s NOT including my solo or group runs). The past few weeks, I’ve been traveling and had a bout of the cold, so I missed three weeks in total. I will tell you, that my body definitely could tell that I had not been attending my sessions. It’s amazing how quickly your muscles forget!
During the workouts, I didn’t have a problem, but it was the after, and the soreness that comes from the lactic acid deposit that KILLED ME! After my return with three weeks away from Pilates, I could tell that my body REALLY does get a great workout from doing it. Participating weekly, the movements are easier and I don’t recognize the soreness.
Taking time off gave me the experience of feeling the benefits of going weekly!
So the cold weather has landed. Not an excuse to NOT run. And not an excuse to drag your butt to the dreadmill. However it IS and excuse to shop for some chic new winter thermal run gear. So I snagged two of these last season’s Nike pullover from Marshall’s and Dicks. I got the shirt in two colors ( normally $58.00 i think ) for $12.00 at Dicks and $14.00 at Marshalls. I paired them with my Nike Pro Combat tights, perfect match. Get your cold weather gear supply up! Wanted to share….off to the gym to do my 4 miler (too late..can’t run in the dark) later guys!

Yes, this year cheering on several of my buddies. Next year I’m in! Good Luck!
One of the many Central Park runs done with the New York Road Runners this summer.
I attended the Baltimore Running festival for my second time this year, I went to support two of my friends as they finished their first Marathon, last year I participated in the 4 person relay team. Actually, this was my second time spectating a race, but I count it as my first Marathon race that I watched from start to finish.
I was able to snag a bib for the 5k and after completing that, I found a comfortable space in the sun on the sidelines near the finish line. I was able to see everyone finish, the time passes surprisingly fast!
The highlight of the weekend for me was meeting meet Ernestine Shepherd (worlds oldest female body builder). Her fit status at her age is my goal!
The beautiful ladies of Black Girls Run! New Jersey and New York participated in the Inaugural Rock and Roll Brooklyn 10K. Awesome medal - sweet reward for 6.2 miles.
I’ve been a little busy since the last post.
